An un-insulated roof and walls leak most of the heat you pay for. This is the biggest single factor, and the one you can fix.

How the fuels compare

In a well-insulated home, usually the cheapest and lowest-carbon option, because it delivers three to four units of heat per unit of electricity. Needs a warm, sealed home to shine.

A common option with a lower up-front cost than a heat pump, but you are still burning fuel at around 90 percent efficiency and exposed to gas prices.

Widespread in rural Ireland, but among the higher-cost and higher-carbon ways to heat, and prices can be volatile. Being phased down over time.

Direct electric heating is simple but expensive to run per unit of heat. A heat pump uses electricity far more efficiently.

Is it cheaper to leave the heating on low all day?

For most homes, no. It is cheaper to heat to a comfortable temperature only when you need it. A well-insulated home holds heat longer, so it needs the heating on far less in the first place.

Will a smart thermostat save me money?

It can, by heating only when and where you need it and avoiding heating an empty house. But it works best alongside good insulation, which reduces how much heat you need at all.

Should I switch fuel or fix the fabric first?

Fix the fabric first. Insulation and airtightness cut the amount of heat you need, which makes any heating system cheaper to run and unlocks the full benefit of a heat pump.

How do grants change the maths?

SEAI grants cover a large share of insulation costs (around 80 percent for attic and cavity) and up to €12,500 towards a heat pump, so the up-front cost of cutting your bill is far lower than it looks.
