What SEAI-registered does and does not mean
Registration is the entry ticket: without it, your grant simply cannot be paid. But it is a floor, not a ceiling. Registered contractors still differ enormously in detailing, reinstatement and honesty of scope, which is why the register is where your shortlist starts, and the questions below are how it gets shorter.

Local matters more than logos
A contractor working your county has referencable jobs you can actually look at, crews who return if something needs attention, and a reputation that lives or dies locally. Ask for addresses of comparable local jobs and speak to a past customer; in Cork and Munster, everyone worth hiring has both to offer. Questions people ask
Is a bigger company automatically safer?
No. Scale changes logistics, not detailing. The questions above measure what actually varies: scope, junction detail, ventilation, reinstatement and documentation, and small excellent firms often beat big volume ones on every line.
Should I get three quotes?
Two or three comparable quotes are healthy, if you compare their scope rather than their totals. One complete quote beats three vague ones, because a vague quote cannot be compared with anything, including itself.
What does CIRI registration add?
The Construction Industry Register Ireland covers the building side of the trade, complementing SEAI’s energy-measure registration. Both together, plus insurance, is the paperwork profile of a contractor running a proper business.
What if something needs attention after handover?
That is what the documentation is for: photos and a written handover define what was delivered, and a local contractor’s willingness to return is exactly the reputation they trade on. Ask how aftercare is handled before you sign, not after.
