Where does your solar go at 7pm? That is the whole battery decision in one line. If your panels’ surplus exports all afternoon for a modest rate, and then you come home and buy expensive grid electricity all evening, a battery closes exactly that gap. If you are home by day, running the dishwasher and immersion on sunshine, the gap barely exists, and the battery has little to store that you were not already using.

A battery is a four-figure purchase with no grant behind it, so it has to justify itself on shifted units alone. The value of each shifted unit is the gap between the full retail price you avoid and the export rate you give up. Multiply that gap by the units you can realistically shift each day, and you have the battery’s annual earnings; set that against its cost and you have your answer. How long do home batteries last?
Quality units are warrantied for roughly a decade or a set number of charge cycles, and degrade gradually rather than failing outright. A battery bought on good arithmetic typically repays within its warranted life; one bought on optimism may not.
Can I go off-grid with a battery?
Realistically, no. An Irish winter has weeks of low generation that no domestic battery bridges. The grid stays your backstop; the battery’s job is shifting hours, not seasons.
